How to Choose the Best Water Purifier?

To choose the right water purifier for your needs, you need to consider several factors. We have mentioned these important points in detail for your reference.

1. Water Source

This is the first factor to consider when buying a new water purifier for your home or office. Common water sources in Indian homes are…

municipal supplies
rivers
Groundwater / Borewell
lake/pond
Water from rivers and lakes is considered to be soft water. And groundwater is considered hard water because it contains a high amount of dissolved solids (TDS). Each water source has its own impurities that require different types of purification. We have mentioned the common impurities depending on the water source.

2. TDS Levels in Water

The most important and primary thing to do before buying a water purifier is to check the level of TDS in the water. These levels tell you how contaminated the water is and which purification method technology is the appropriate choice.

TDS or also called Total Dissolved Solids, represents the concentration of dissolved contaminants present in water. Some natural minerals are calcium, potassium, sodium, and magnesium. Dissolved salts can easily pass through 2-micrometers or so of pores without being noticed.

The proper level of TDS in the water is also important- because if the TDS level is low then the taste will be terrible. On the other hand, if the TDS level is high, it represents impurities like lead, fluoride, arsenic, and others.

TDS levels in water can be measured using a digital TDS meter and can be represented in ppm (parts per million) or mg/L.

The digital TDS meter will tell you the number of dissolved impurities. However, it won’t tell you…

Types of dissolved solids present
Concentration level of each dissolved impurities
Most TDS levels consist of harmless salts such as calcium, sodium, and magnesium. However, some dissolved solids are very harmful even when consumed in small amounts. Some of these harmful total dissolved solids are nitrates, arsenic, and fluoride.

If you live in an agricultural area or an industrial area, you must be aware of the fact that there is a misuse of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Therefore, there is a high probability of these contaminants entering the groundwater or river stream.

Let us now see the types of impurities, TDS levels, and which purification method is suitable for your needs.

3. Water Purification Technology

There are currently three types of water purification technologies in the Indian market – RO (reverse osmosis), UF (ultra-filtration), and UV (ultra-violet). The working mechanisms of these purification methods differ from each other with their own advantages and disadvantages. Below, we have explained in detail how these methods work and other information.

Many types of contaminants are present in water. Not all water purification systems are equipped to deal with different water sources and their specific impurities. Every purification technology has different water purification efficiency. If you choose the wrong filter, the water may not be treated or filtered which will probably harm you and your family.

You should be aware of all the types of filters available and their mechanism before making a purchase. Check the water source available in the market and make an informed decision.

a) Reverse Osmosis (RO)

As the name suggests, this technique is the opposite of osmosis. In this process, water will have to move from a higher concentration to a bottom through a semipermeable membrane. Since this is against the natural tendency of water, you may have to apply force.

RO membranes have tiny pores that allow water to pass through dissolved salts and other pollutants like bacteria, viruses, and more. The size of the pores is about 0.0001 µm. Once the water passes through this filter, it will be free of organic molecules and viruses. Apart from this, it also removes the minerals present in the water. The reverse osmosis process also removes monovalent ions which will also lead to the desalination of water.

When to use RO water purifier – If TDS level is more than 500 ppm.

It can remove impurities – lead, calcium, sodium, aluminum, fluoride boron, organic chemicals, nitrates, calcium, sulfate, potassium, magnesium, and manganese.

Benefit:

This will remove all contaminants such as bacteria, arsenic, viruses, and dissolved salts.
Provides safe and tasty water
Requires very little maintenance
Drawbacks:

Also removes healthy minerals. However, models with a TDS controller and mineralizers will retain the natural minerals.
A continuous water supply is needed. They throw away 3 liters of water to provide 1 liter of pure water.
Electricity is required for operation.
Expensive as compared to other water purifiers.

b) Ultra-Filtration

Like RO, ultrafiltration also has a semi-permeable membrane to purify the water. However, the main difference between them – UF has larger pores (0.01 µm) whereas RO membranes have smaller pores (0/0001 µm).

The main advantage of ultrafiltration is that they operate without any possibility of electricity because water can easily pass through large pores without using any additional pressure or gravity of a water pump. Since UF purifiers do not release any water, there will be no wastage.

However, UF water purifiers have some limitations and one of them is the large pore size. UF purifiers will only remove bacteria, endotoxins, suspended solids, and other pathogens. It cannot remove dissolved solids or reduce TDS levels. This makes UF purifiers not suitable for the purification of water with high TDS levels.

When to use Ultrafiltration Purifier – If TDS level in water is less than 500 ppm

It can remove impurities – bacteria, protozoa, viruses, proteins, silica, silt, colloids, silica, plastics, endotoxins, smog, pyrogens, and macromolecules that are larger than the size of the membrane pore.

Benefits:

no electricity needed
effective cost
does not wastewater
Able to purify dirty dirty water
Works well with normal pipe water pressure

Drawbacks:

Removes only bacteria and suspended matter
does not remove dissolved salts

c) Ultraviolet Purification

If you have to deal with bacteria and viruses in water, ultraviolet purification is the right choice. This water purifier has a UV lamp. When water flows through the lamp it receives a lethal dose of UV light (254-nm wavelength). And this light will attack the DNA and kill them.

But UV purifiers are not capable of removing dissolved or insoluble chemicals or impurities from water. This is why most UV purifiers on the market use other types of external sediment filters to remove insoluble impurities. For example, activated carbon filters are used to remove chlorine and other dissolved impurities.

When to use Ultraviolet Purifier – If TDS level is less than 500ppm

Impurities that it can remove – Viruses and bacteria

Benefits:

Kills about 99.9% of harmful viruses and bacteria
requires less energy
Does not use chemicals like chlorine
Leaves no chemicals after taste or adds any odor to the water
low maintenance

Drawbacks:

Not able to remove contaminants or purify dirty or dirty water
Doesn’t work during the power cut

d) Gravity Based Water Purifier

If you are just looking for basic purification, then a gravity-based water purifier is the best option.

Usually, in these purifiers, the filters in gravity water purifiers will be installed between the two compartments. Using gravity the water will pass through the filter from the top container to the bottom one to the bottom compartment. The lower compartment is where the purified water will be stored and dispensed through the tap. Gravity-based water purifiers do not require electricity to operate, so they are commonly called non-electrical water purifiers.

They use activated carbon or UF filters in this type of water purifier. The activated carbon filter is made of tiny carbon granules which will absorb all the impurities present in it as it passes through the water. When it comes to UF filters, it consists of a membrane with hollow fibers. When water passes through the membrane, the impurities will stick to the fibers and only pure water will pass through it. In some gravity water purifiers, a secondary microfiber mesh is also present between the two compartments, while in others this is not available. This secondary filter will remove any major impurities before filtering the water.

When to use Gravity Water Purifier – If TDS level is less than 500ppm. Recommended for municipal water.

It removes impurities – if it has an activated carbon filter – removes chlorine, pesticides, benzene, volatile organic compounds, color, odor. If it has UF – Removes sediment, microorganisms, and extremely fine particles.

Benefits:

Doesn’t need electricity
Water provided is safer than boiled water
Less maintenance
Removes virus and germs from the water
Removes turbidity
cost-effective
Easy to clean and use
It can be placed anywhere at home – table, countertop, or any corner
Drawbacks:

Required regular cleaning
Doesn’t remove dissolved and heavy metal chemical contaminants
